Wednesday, September 5th, 2018

United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley kicked off its annual fundraising campaign on Thursday, August 30th at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center. Approximately 900 people were present at United Way’s biggest event of the year.

This year’s campaign theme “United We Win” emphasizes that when we tackle our community’s problems together as a community – we win. Randy Burt, District Manager of Publix Supermarkets, announced United Way’s goal to raise $7,000,000 for the 2018 campaign.

“It’s a feeling like no other to see what we can do in our community, but it comes with a responsibility,” said Burt. “If we work together as a community, we can pass on the charge to make positive changes in the lives of local residents. United – We Win,” he added.

Individuals impacted by United Way shared their stories with kickoff attendees. Brittney Wheeler, a freshmen at Columbus High School and a Girls Inc. of Columbus member; Susan Wiggins, Women United Board Member; Gabe Jones, United Way Youth Council member and recipient of the Tri DVS 2018 Youth Volunteer Service Award; and Dr. Scarborough, Principal of Fox Elementary School; spoke about how United Way has impacted their lives, and what a necessity United Way is to the Chattahoochee Valley.

“When there is a need, our community combines efforts so that everyone wins,” said Scott Ferguson, President & CEO of United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley. “We’re looking forward to continuing to see the successes and victories that come with winning as a community,” he added.

Funds raised during the campaign are invested in local programs by volunteers. The programs must meet a need in one of United Way’s four core areas of Health, Income, Basic Needs, and Education, demonstrate results, and show good stewardship of the community’s monies.

Columbus State University, CTV Beam, elected officials, Sunshine Banners, United Way Board of Directors, United Way Partner Agencies, and WOW! were thanked for their support of the event.
