Staff Report

Monday, December 6th, 2021

Emerging Leaders United, an affinity group of United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, had their first annual signature event: The Great Chatt. This event aims to connect young leaders with influential community leaders. The group hopes to foster powerful dialogue around philanthropic and civic engagement through these conversations and how giving back to our community can positively influence your career.

One of our honorary guests, Hayley Tillery, had this to say about the event, “The Great Chatt was incredible! Not only did I have the opportunity to share my story, but I got to connect with so many young leaders who have the heart, drive, and passion for our community! From the conversations at every table, the theme was that in order for us to be changed we must be United in these efforts and bring awareness on the resources that are out there. These young leaders are ready to take risks, face challenges, and bring change for the better.”

The honorary guests included Rodney Close, Betsy Covington, Isaiah Hugley, Mayor Eddie Lowe, Rinkesh Patel, Hayley Tillery, Dionne Rosser-Mims, Melody Trimble, and Dorenda Weaver. Honorary guests rotated tables between courses allowing guests an opportunity to network with three different influential community leaders.

The Great Chatt event was a success with 64 guests in attendance. Emerging Leaders United wanted to share how attendees could further their mission by starting a scholarship for graduating high school seniors for up to $2,500 for a school or certificate. They also presented Erica Walker with the Emerging Leader of the Year award.

“It’s such an honor to be named Emerging Leader of the Year!” said Erica Walker. “A huge thank you to those who have supported me and especially to United Way for creating countless opportunities for me to develop myself as a leader in our community. In the words of Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, ‘I’m very lucky to do work that is an expression of my soul.’” she added.

Thank you to Hotel Indigo at Columbus Riverfront Place for providing a beautiful location for this event.

Emerging Leaders are an inspiring group of young people under the age of 40 who contribute over $365 to the United Way. Guided by passion, Emerging Leaders disrupt the status quo. They’re the changemakers of our community, dedicating their time and talents to service and advocacy.
