Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, July 26th, 2016

The Georgia House of Representatives recently created the House Study Committee on Historic Site Preservation, which will investigate the efficiency of state programs for preservation until December 1 of this year. The committee includes five members from the House.

Speaker of the House David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) appointed the following members to the committee:

Representative Chuck Williams (R-Watkinsville) will serve as chair; Rep. Debbie Buckner (D-Junction City) will occupy the vice chair position; and Rep. Beth Beskin (R-Atlanta), Rep. Buzz Brockway (R-Lawrenceville), and Rep. Trey Rhodes (R-Greensboro) will also serve on the committee.

These members will periodically assess existing state programs to determine whether such programs continue to aid the cause of historic preservation or have failed that purpose. After their investigation, they will conduct a comprehensive review of programs, their costs, and the ways in which such programs might become more successful.

Furthermore, the committee will identify sites with historical and cultural significance to Georgia in order to best preserve these locations.
