Inaugural Engineering & Technology Week to Incorporate Fun and Learning to Provide Something for Everyone

Staff Report From Columbus CEO

Tuesday, May 9th, 2017

In an effort to help spread the word about the importance of engineering and technology in today’s workforce, Columbus Technical College has teamed up with several community partners to present its first Engineering & Technology Week May 8-11, 2017. Each day will feature a different event with a focus on different audiences.

To start the week, the College is hosting a breakfast/panel discussion with experts from area business partners in the engineering field. Tuesday will be the wildest day when Columbus Technical College and Columbus State University will bring in several hundred 7th graders from the Muscogee County School District. This will mark the official kick-off of our region’s involvement in the GEARUP! campaign. On Wednesday, Columbus Technical College will provide lunch and opportunities for adult education students, community centers, Fort Benning, and more to gain insight on what it takes to get hired in today’s world. The wild week will cap off on Thursday with an Open House at the Robert L. Wright, Jr. Health Sciences Center. See the below descriptions for more details, including the times and locations of each event. We hope to see you next week!

Mon., May 8 - Get Hired for a High-Tech Career
Join us from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in the Patrick Hall Student Center for a Chick-fil-A breakfast and a panel discussion featuring experts from Pratt & Whitney, ColumbusMakesIT! and the City of Columbus’
Engineering Dept. They’ll share what employers are looking for when it comes to filling these
high-tech jobs. The public is welcome to attend.

Tues., May 9 - GEAR UP! For Middle School Day

From 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m, hundreds of Muscogee County middle school students will converge in front of the Hartline and Gordy buildings on the Columbus Technical College campus for tours, program demos, lunch, prizes, and much more! GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a Dept. of Education program aimed at helping at-risk students become academically successful.

Wed., May 10 - Community Day

As much as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to raise itself up. Providing an educated workforce goes a long way to ensure the long term success and premier quality of life in our region. Join us in the Patrick Hall Student Center starting at noon for lunch and a panel discussion/Q&A with those who know what it takes to get hired. Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce CEO Brian Anderson and Vice President of Mission Services for our area’s Goodwill will lead the discussion.

Thurs., May 11 - Open House

From 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., the Robert L. Wright, Jr. Health Sciences Center will set the stage for a fun Open House featuring on-site admission (no fee!) and registration, food, giveaways, program displays, live
demonstrations, and much, much more. High school students and parents: come by and learn how to earn FREE college credit through Georgia’s Move On When Ready law! The public is encouraged to attend.
