Touring an ambulance and hearing from a variety of health care professionals are among the activities planned for a Medical Symposium for Junior Volunteers taking part in the annual summer program at St. Francis. That event, set for Wednesday, June 28, kicks off the summer activities.

Fifteen high school students from six area schools are taking part in the summer program.  The symposium on Wednesday will also include a tour of the Labor and Delivery unit and a patient room as well as viewing of laboratory specimens through a microscope in the Laboratory. It concludes with a health care careers panel discussion.

“The St. Francis Junior Volunteer program is a great way for high school students to serve their community during the summer and to learn more about medical careers,” said Kathryn Fussell, Director of Volunteers. “Students must complete an application form, have their school guidance counselor complete the counselor reference form, and have two adults complete a personal reference form. Then, before the program begins, participants must take part in an orientation and training course.”

To participate, students must be between 16 and 18 years old. Applications are accepted from February 1 through April 1 each year.
