St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School Students Work Together to Fight Childhood Hunger

Staff Report From Columbus CEO

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018

Did you know one out of every five children in the state of Georgia goes to school hungry? St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School students are working together to fight childhood hunger! Cereal donated by school families during the month of January 2018 will be presented to St. Anne Community Outreach during a morning school-wide Grains for Brains celebration, to be held Friday, February 2, 2018 in the school’s gym. Donations will be distributed to clients who visit Outreach, as well as shared with several other food pantries and agencies in Columbus for distribution to the less fortunate in our community. This special event is planned in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week, an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States.

The primary mission of St. Anne Community Outreach, a ministry of St. Anne Catholic Church, is to provide food and clothing to Muscogee County residents in great need or in emergency situations. In 2017, St. Anne Community Outreach had 4,943 visits – nearly 4,400 of those visits were to receive groceries. This past year, St. Anne Community Outreach was able to give food to 11,709 of our neighbors, providing just under 250,000 meals.

During the February 2nd Grains for Brains celebration, students will learn about childhood hunger from Feeding the Valley President and CEO Frank Sheppard, whose non-profit organization provides food to St. Anne Community Outreach for distribution. As part of the celebration, students will be encouraged wear pajamas, and bring their breakfast to school or purchase Chick-fil-A Chicken Biscuits sold at school. Proceeds from February 2nd Chick-fil-A Chicken Biscuit sales will benefit Feeding the Valley's Buddy Pack program. The Buddy Pack program serves children who live in food insecure homes and are likely to experience hunger; the program bridges the gap between the school week and the weekend, when free breakfasts and lunches are not available.

St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School through Catholic formation and academic excellence, is committed to the spiritual, intellectual, and physical development of the students entrusted to our care.
