Adult Education Open Enrollment Event Today

Staff Report From Columbus CEO

Monday, March 4th, 2019

An oft-used and appropriate quote in regards to the importance of education – ‘education is the great equalizer of the conditions of men (Horace Mann)’ has never been more accurate than in today’s world. After all, without a quality education, one would be hard-pressed to find a career that is enough to support a family. To encourage new students to start or continue their educational future, Columbus Technical College is offering a special Adult Education Open Enrollment Event on Monday, March 4th from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the library building on its Manchester Expressway campus. This one-stop event will allow attendees to enroll in FREE GED preparation classes.

Anyone can apply for GED classes at any time through the Columbus Technical College website (www.columbustech.edu) but this special event is geared for those who may not have access to computers or who may have just not gotten around to it. Organizers want to make this process as user-friendly as possible.

“Education begins within the community at any level at any location. The most important thing we can do is listen to the needs of our students and make sure we provide what we can to the best of our ability,” said Director of Adult Education April Hopson. “The students are the goal and we are here for whatever needs they may have. This event is another way to enroll students who are not sure enough to make an appointment or have a crazy work schedule- they can just decide to take classes and walk in that day!”

Those over 18 will need to show a valid ID while those under 18 years of age will need to provide the ID, a school withdraw form, and have a guardian co-sign their paperwork. The College hosted its first such event in December and nearly two dozen students ended up starting 2019 with a commitment to earn their GED; organizers hope the event in March will bring in even more students.

Columbus Technical College provides education services to residents in six counties: Chattahoochee, Harris, Muscogee, Quitman, Stewart, and Talbot.
