Robert Watkins, Georgia Power manager and CEO of Columbus-based R.J. Watkins Homes, has been named a “Hometown Hero” by the Greater Columbus Homebuilders Association (GCHBA), according to Dusty Worsley, executive officer of the association.  The designation recognizes Home Builders Association of Georgia chapter members who devote time and resources to local non-profits and other organizations, as well as to their local HBAG chapter.

“I am delighted to name Robert Watkins as our chapter’s first Hometown Hero,” said Worsley.  “Not only is he the current GCHBA President, but he has been instrumental in the efforts to reinvigorate downtown Columbus as a member of the Board of Directors of Uptown Columbus and the organization’s Finance Committee Chairman.  Robert is one of many concerned citizens who have transformed downtown Columbus from a largely abandoned area into a thriving live, work and play district with businesses, restaurants, retail, arts and much, much more.”

“While I am delighted to be named a GCHBA Hometown Hero, I really have just been a long time participant in a great effort to turn downtown Columbus around,” said Watkins.  “It is extremely rewarding to see what has been accomplished in just a couple of decades.  Our downtown now boasts several theaters including the Springer Opera House, Columbus State University, the longest urban whitewater course in the nation, a nursing school, over-the-river zip line and so much more.  Columbus is now home to the National Kayaking Championship when it is on the East Coast, and nearly every week there is a festival, free concert, and other entertainment options.  As a homebuilder, I am proud to introduce new residents to our wonderful city.”

Watkins, who is also a manager at Georgia Power Company, is a graduate of the University of Georgia.  He lives on Lake Harding with his wife Teresa.  Together, they have three daughters.  For more information about R.J. Watkins Homes, call 706-325-2737.
