Georgia Society of Professional Engineers: Rippling Supply Chain Disruptions

Friday, June 5th, 2020

Recently many people have become acutely aware the importance of the “supply chain”. People need stuff. Every day people need stuff. People have always needed stuff; the necessities and pleasures of life. Even in ancient times people specialized in combining raw materials, supplying effort, making tools and containers and transporting in order to make stuff available for others. In the twentieth century this became known as the supply chain, particularly when applied to large scale production. Many industrial engineers, the engineering disciple related to organizing people and resources to complete tasks, frequently plan, design, and operate portions of supply chains.

The larger supply chain has never been static. It has ebbed and flowed and adjusted to changing conditions and popular desires. Recent months though have seen disruptions resulting in shortages, excessive surpluses, collapsing markets and new needs. A different product mix to meet the emergency required an unprecedented shift in resources and distribution. Labor to process materials became unavailable and products were not completed for the next link in the supply chain.

Greg White, Principal and Host of Supply Chain Now and Partner with Trefoil Advisory and Thomas Valentine of President, Valentine Solutions will address the June 8th online monthly meeting of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers Atlanta Metro Chapter will be live online panel presentation on Rippling Supply Chain Disruptions, via the GSPE YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/GSPEng starting at 6:50 PM. The discussion will cover what is considered a supply chain, the characteristics of the supply chain before COVID19, how it was disrupted, the impact on orders, freight and transportation, common misconceptions, and a vision of the future supply chain. Participants will be able to pose question by text message. The meeting presentation will be recorded and available for later viewing. The presentation, like the previous presentations, will qualify for a required professional development hour (PDH). Currently registered professional engineers, those engineers aspiring to become PEs, and others engaged in engineering would benefit from the presentation. Members of the general public are also welcomed to learn about technology, engineering and public welfare.
