Fire, EMS Crew Named First Friday Hero

Staff Report

Monday, November 9th, 2020

Piedmont Columbus Regional has named Jarrel Whitehead, Daniel Sparks, Jacob Williamson, and Brad Jordan with the Columbus Department of Fire and EMS the organization’s First Friday Hero for the month of November.

Fire and EMS responded to a call of a woman having chest pain at her home. As crews were preparing to transport the patient to the hospital, her heart began beating quickly and out of rhythm—causing her to become unresponsive. The crew immediately began CPR and the patient was able to breathe again on her own. After being rushed to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown’s Emergency Department, a stint was put in.

Because of the quick actions of the crew, the patient was able to make a full recovery—even stopping by the fire station to thank the crew for saving her life.

A ceremony with Whitehead, Sparks, Williamson, Jordan, and hospital leadership will be held at a later date to commend them for their response. Their story is also featured throughout the hospital on commemorative posters and Piedmont Columbus Regional’s social media pages.

Piedmont Columbus Regional created the First Friday Hero program in mid-2016 to recognize first responders each month who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Their line of work is often a thankless job and we want to make the community aware of our local heroes and all they do to make Columbus a better and safer place.
