On May 29, Piedmont Columbus Regional, in partnership with the state of Georgia’s Path2College 529 Plan, welcomed Carus May Kincaid, the hospital’s first “529 Day Baby,” and awarded her a $1,529 contribution to her Path2College 529 Plan savings account. Carus May was born at 9:11 a.m. on May 29— weighing 8 lb., 5 oz. and 21 inches long.

“We are very grateful for this wonderful opportunity for Carus’ future,” said her mother, Leah Kincaid of Smiths Station, Ala. “This gives us a great start on her college planning.”

This is the eighth year the Path2College 529 Plan has partnered with Piedmont Columbus Regional to award a college savings account to a “529 Day Baby.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in the future education of one of our youngest patients. The goals of this program align with our mission to support the needs of children in our community and to make a difference in the lives we touch,” said Cary Burcham, Chief Nursing Officer at Piedmont Columbus Regional.

States across the country recognize May 29— known as 529 Day— as a day to raise awareness about each state’s 529 plan and the importance of saving for college.

“Throughout the year we promote the benefit of financial planning for future education goals. The 529 Day Baby celebration raises awareness of Georgia’s college savings plan and will inspire families to utilize the resources we have to help them save,” said Georgia Student Finance Commission President Lynne Riley.

Families who welcome a new baby in 2023 also have an opportunity to win money for their newborn’s college savings.
