Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) proudly announces that Coach Steve O'Steen has been recognized as the Distinguished Athlete at the 2024 Hall of Fame Awards, a fitting tribute to his remarkable career and unwavering commitment to the college and the community.
Since assuming the role of CVCC's head softball coach in September 2000, Coach O'Steen has become a cornerstone of the college's athletic program. A lifelong resident of Phenix City and a CVCC alumnus, his association with the college dates back to 1977, marking a journey filled with dedication and excellence.
Before his coaching career, Coach O'Steen's path was defined by service and leadership. After graduating from Central High School in 1976 and enrolling at CVCC in 1977, he began a notable career in law enforcement, initially as a dispatcher with the Phenix City Police Department. His law enforcement career included commendable achievements, such as being named Russell County Deputy Sheriff of the Year in 1987 and serving as Patrol Commander with the Sheriff’s Department.
Coach O'Steen's transition to coaching began in 1993 with the Phenix City Parks and Recreation, followed by leading Girls Travel Softball from 1996 until 2000. His appointment as the head coach of CVCC's Fastpitch Softball in September 2000 was a turning point, marking the start of an era of significant achievements for the Lady Pirates softball team.
Under his leadership, the team has soared to impressive heights, participating in the NJCAA Region XXII tournament 16 times and clinching the NJCAA Region XXII South Conference title. Coach O'Steen's expertise as a coach is further highlighted by his success in mentoring six NJCAA Academic All-American teams and 25 NJCAA Academic All-American players.
Coach O'Steen's coaching philosophy extends beyond the field. He and his wife, Jane Wood O'Steen, are proud parents to their daughter, Candice O’Steen Jenks Davis, and grandparents to their grandson, Benton Ryland Jenks. The O’Steens, deeply rooted in their community, are active Crawford Road Baptist Church members. This family-oriented approach extends into Coach O’Steen’s professional life, where for over 40 years, his humble nature and competitive spirit have been instrumental in shaping the lives of countless student-athletes. He and Jane have created a nurturing environment for student-athletes, treating them as an extension of their family. Their support for students encompasses both athletic training and life mentorship, exemplifying the qualities of a true servant leader.
As Coach O'Steen enters his 24th season with CVCC, his legacy continues to grow. His contributions to softball and student-athlete development have earned him respect and admiration across the college and the broader community.
