Columbus Airport to Host Groundbreaking Ceremony for Runway Reconstruction

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, July 21st, 2025

Columbus Airport (CSG) is proud to announce the official groundbreaking for the full reconstruction of Runway 6-24, one of the airport’s two primary runways. Due to decades of wear and tear and underlying storm drainage issues, the 6,997-foot asphalt runway will undergo a comprehensive rebuild beginning this August.

The reconstruction comes following an in-depth geotechnical assessment that included site reconnaissance, soil test borings, and sampling evaluations. The findings concluded that a complete runway overhaul is required. The project will include removal and replacement of the asphalt surface and base materials, installation of a new longitudinal drainage system, and replacement of storm drains located beneath the runway.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., and will be attended by members of the Columbus Airport Commission, airport leadership, and local city and state representatives.

The 103-day construction project is estimated to cost $24 million and will require the full closure of Runway 6-24, temporarily suspending all commercial, military, and large general aviation operations. During this time, Runway 13-31, the airport’s secondary runway, will remain operational except for a brief period when both runways will be closed as contractors work through the intersection.

Located at 3250 W. Britt David Road in Columbus, Georgia, Columbus Airport serves as a vital regional and public-use facility for Muscogee, Russell, and Harris counties, as well as Ft. Benning. The airport provides both commercial airline service and general aviation operations, supporting the transportation needs of west-central Georgia and east-central Alabama.
