Gene Perkins Celebrates Two Years as SunTrust Columbus Market President

After years as a career soldier’s son living in Fort Benning, Korea and Germany, SunTrust market president Gene Perkins and his family finally settled in Columbus in 1982. Perkins attended Mercer University before being commissioned as an officer in the Army Reserves. This position took him to Fort Benjamin in Indianapolis where Perkins started his banking career, but when a position opened up with SunTrust in Macon, he jumped at the chance to be closer to family and warmer weather.

AT&T Has Big Impact on Columbus Region

Mercer University Beats Duke; Prepares for Continued Growth

The past few years have been all about growth for Mercer University—especially in the medical sector--with a continued effort to double the number of medical students by adding more programs for aspiring medical professionals, such as their Ph.D. in Clinical Medical Psychology degree and a four-year program added at the Savannah campus. The Mercer Health Sciences Center, which opened in 2012, is another piece to help "address the shortage of healthcare access in our region," President Underwood says.
