Senator Reverend Warnock has successfully secured $2.5 million in federal funding for NeighborWorks Columbus as part of the recently passed Fiscal Year 2024 minibus government funding bill. This bill, which passed the Senate with a vote of 75-22, encompasses various provisions aimed at enhancing access to affordable housing, safeguarding crucial nutritional assistance programs for children and families, facilitating infrastructure enhancements statewide, and more.

Among the highlights of this legislation is the allocation of direct federal funding for 74 projects across Georgia, totaling $207 million. Senator Warnock's advocacy has ensured that $2.5 million will be allocated specifically to address the need for affordable housing in Columbus. This investment will be directed toward the construction of a 130-unit low-income senior rental complex, known as Providence Pointe and the completion of 9 single family homes at Elliott’s Walk, the first new housing development in South Columbus in over five decades. Given that over 20% of Columbus' population comprises low-income residents aged 55 and above, there is a pressing demand for such affordable housing options. The funds secured by Senator Warnock will serve as crucial gap financing to offset increased interest rates and construction costs that have arisen since the project's initial budgeting phase.

Reflecting on the significance of this legislation, Senator Warnock remarked, "I believe a budget reflects one's values, and this legislation, with its investments in priorities like upgrading infrastructure in Savannah, building affordable housing in Columbus, and ensuring food security for working families in Valdosta reflects my commitment to serving all Georgians and working to leave the state better than how I found it." He emphasized his dedication to addressing the historical neglect experienced by rural and marginalized communities in Georgia, striving to reverse this trend through his efforts in Washington. Additionally, the legislation includes provisions championed by Senator Warnock to enhance affordable housing access, safeguard nutritional assistance programs, improve infrastructure, bolster the aviation economy, strengthen healthcare services for veterans and servicemembers, and more. President Biden signed this bill into law on March 9, 2024.
