What does Business Generosity Mean to Millennials? Gen Z?

Whether you are looking to support your managers who fall into the Millennial generation or recruit the future of your business with Gen Z, the 2024 Business Generosity Report revealed significant differences between the specific needs and wishes of each generation. 

Snapshot of Gen Z – Entry-Level Employees

Gen Z is most motivated to leave a job due to a lack of business generosity—whether it be a lack of generosity to employees (62%), to the community (52%), or in the way a business operates (51%).

Additionally, a shocking 83% report burnout the in the workplace, with nearly a third completely burnt out or managing high levels of burnout that directly affect their work.

Other key priorities include: 

  • A higher level of importance is placed on sustainability and having colleagues from different backgrounds, experiences, and points of view.

Snapshot of Millennials – Mangers and Mid-Level Executives 

What’s important to note is that more than any other generation, Millennials say a generous workplace is extremely important (49%). Additionally, Millennials seek empathy from their superiors, recognition for the work they are doing, and support for this busy stage of life. 

Other key priorities include: 

  • Empathy and flexibility are most important. They are seeking managers who care about them as people and are 10 points more likely to value flexibility. 

  • They trust employers to weather politics – levels of trust are strongest among Millennials for the company they work for. Learn more.

Snapshot of Gen X – Leadership 

Gen X is most interested in being respected and appreciated for the work they have done and are less concerned with the inner workings of the office. 

Other key priorities include: 

  • They are less likely to be burnt out (only 38%) and less likely to be phased by politics (63% think it will have no impact on company culture). 

  • They remain willing to walk away when generosity is neglected. 51% have left jobs due to a lack of generosity.
