Following a national search, Columbus State University has selected Breana Jones to lead its Leadership Institute. Jones, an eight-year veteran of the Leadership Institute, began her official duties as the organization’s new executive director on Jan. 13.

Those responsibilities include leading the institute’s strategic planning, program development and client engagement to ensure its growth, profitability and alignment with the university's mission.

“Because of her eight years with the Leadership Institute, Breana deeply understands what it takes to run a small business within a higher education institution. I am confident the Leadership Institute, under her guidance, will continue to provide unmatched leadership development for our current clients, as well as grow the institute beyond our current regional reach,” said Assistant Vice President for Community Engagement Shana Young, whose expanded duties—in addition to continuing to oversee the Leadership Institute—include overseeing the William B. Turner Center for Servant Leadership, Continuing & Professional Education, the Center for Career Design, and community-focused special projects.

As director, Jones will manage leadership and professional development programs serving external partners and internal university employees, maintain client relationships and foster the institute's brand. As she has done through her role as assistant director of client experience & business development, she will facilitate leadership sessions, conduct research and ensure continuous improvement of the institute's offerings.

Since 2005, the Leadership Institute has provided leadership development and business consulting services throughout the Southeast and across diverse sectors—including Fortune 500 corporations, healthcare, state and local government agencies, and nonprofits. Its interactive, challenging programs and courses have empowered thousands of leaders, from front-line supervisors to senior executives, by helping them hone their skills and develop their potential.

In 2024, the Leadership Institute’s staff consulted with more than 30 clients, hosted free public monthly “Disruptive Leadership Series” webinars, spoke at events and conferences, and continued its internal leadership development for Columbus State employees. It maintains a 98% satisfaction rating among participants for the usefulness of its programs and strategies to their day-to-day duties and journeys to be effective leaders.
