Columbus Airport to Host Town Hall Meeting on Runway 6-24 Reconstruction Project
Tuesday, April 15th, 2025
Columbus Airport will host a public Town Hall meeting in partnership with Holt Consulting LLC, to provide information and answer questions regarding the upcoming full reconstruction of Runway 6/24. The project addresses issues stemming from decades of routine wear and tear and storm drain deterioration beneath the runway.
The Town Hall will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 5:30 PM at Columbus Airport’s Main Terminal, 2nd Floor. Light refreshments will be served.
Columbus Airport operates two asphalt runways:
-
Runway 6/24: 6,997 feet long by 150 feet wide
-
Runway 13/31: 3,997 feet long by 75 feet wide
A geotechnical assessment of Runway 6/24—which included site reconnaissance, soil borings, and sampling—determined the need for complete reconstruction. The project will involve full removal and replacement of the existing asphalt and base materials, installation of new storm drainage lines beneath the runway, and the addition of a longitudinal drainage system alongside the pavement.
Construction is anticipated to begin in August 2025 and will span a continuous 103-day period at an estimated cost of $22.2 million funded through FAA and GDOT grants. During this time, Runway 6/24—the primary runway—will be closed, suspending all commercial, large general aviation, and military operations. Runway 13/31 will remain open for general aviation operations, except for a brief 30-day period when both runways will be closed to accommodate work at the runway intersection.
Columbus Airport is a regional, public-use facility located at 3250 W. Britt David Road, serving Muscogee, Russell, and Harris Counties, as well as Ft. Benning, with both commercial airline and general aviation services. For more information, please visit www.flycolumbusga.com.
