The Muscogee Educational Excellence Foundation (MEEF) named Chris Grier the 2026 MCSD Teacher of the Year. Grier is a physical education teacher at Clubview Elementary School. The announcement was made in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 1,100 teachers and community leaders on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center in Columbus, Georgia. The announcement marked the culmination of the Muscogee Educational Excellence Foundation’s annual Teacher of the Year program for the Muscogee County School District.

“Chris understands that learning doesn’t just happen at a desk—it happens in movement, in teamwork, and in the moments where students discover what they’re capable of.” said Marquette McKnight, MEEF Administrator. “As a physical education teacher, his classroom is the gym—a space filled with energy, encouragement, and opportunity. But beyond the games and activities, Mr. Grier uses that space to reinforce and extend the learning happening throughout the entire school.

He partners with classroom teachers to support academic goals, helping students apply skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance in ways that connect directly back to their learning. Whether it’s reinforcing structure, focus, or collaboration, his impact reaches far beyond the gym.

In his class, students learn confidence. They learn resilience. They learn how to support one another and how to keep going when something feels difficult.

For many students, his class is more than just a time to move—it’s a place where they feel seen, supported, and capable.

Through his energy, his leadership, and his commitment to every child, Mr. Grier is shaping not only healthy students—but confident learners prepared for success in every classroom.”

Grier was selected from 53 Teacher of the Year Honorees representing every school in the Muscogee County School District. His educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that learning happens through movement, teamwork, relationships, and encouragement. As a physical education teacher, he partners with classroom teachers across Clubview Elementary to reinforce academic and social-emotional learning through collaboration, structure, problem-solving, and perseverance.“For many students, the gym becomes more than just a place for physical activity,” Grier shared. “It becomes a place where they feel seen, supported, and confident in themselves. I

believe every child deserves opportunities to grow not only academically, but as individuals who understand the value of teamwork and resilience. We want our students to believe in their own potential.”

2022 Top Three Teacher of the Year and 2023 Harvard Fellow Gina Davis, who served on this year’s selection committee, said Grier’s ability to connect with students was impossible to ignore. “Chris creates an atmosphere where every student feels included and encouraged,” Davis noted. “He understands that some of the most important lessons students learn happen through relationships, teamwork, and overcoming challenges together. His energy, leadership, and genuine care for students are felt the moment you walk into his classroom.”

Each of the school TOTY Honorees are recognized and honored throughout the year in a variety of ways. In March, all the TOTYs were honored at an MCSD-sponsored breakfast with the MCSD TOTY and the Georgia TOTY. At the Gala every TOTY received a framed certificate of recognition and a $100 honorarium.  The Top Ten honorees also received a framed certificate of recognition, the opportunity to attend a world class professional development at Harvard, and a $500 honorarium.
