On March 13, 2014, Caleshia Ferguson was named the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley’s 2014 Youth of the Year. As the new Youth of the Year, 18 year old Ferguson is a true example of an extraordinary young woman recognized by the Boys & Girls Club of America for her great performance in school, leadership qualities, determination and her role in the community. Upon being named the 2014 Youth of the Year, Ferguson was awarded a $500 book scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley. Alongside Ferguson, the three runners-up, Joseph Knight, Austin Leathers and Jhaqula Tyson were also awarded a $250 book scholarship.
In addition to being named the 2014 Youth of the Year, Ferguson also won the Wellcare of Georgia’s Healthy Citizen Award. Wellcare of Georgia provided Caleshia with a $500 Wellcare Leadership grant and plaque during the state competition in Atlanta in early March. Ferguson was judged on her service and support to address community based issues and club healthy lifestyle programs.
As Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier youth program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community, and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles, and contributing to their communities.
As a senior at G. W. Carver High School, Ferguson exhibits exemplary Youth of the Year qualities. She is a member of the Fine Arts Department, studies in her spare time and volunteers in the community. Post-graduation, she plans to attend Albany State University to pursue her dreams of becoming a dental hygienist.
