Press release from the issuing company
Friday, January 9th, 2015
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is pleased to present Music in America on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. attend Know the Score, a pre-concert conversation with Music Director and Conductor George Del Gobbo, about the music being performed during the concert in the Studio Theatre.
The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster, David Coucheron, performing Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, Op. 14. Other works include Alan Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 2, Op. 132 “Mysterious Mountain,” Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, and Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, Op. 30 “Romantic.”
In the words of CSO Music Director and Conductor George Del Gobbo, “This concert includes music written at about the mid-point of the twentieth century by four of America's most distinguished and accomplished composers. From the mysticism of Alan Hovhaness, and the heart-rending lyricism of Samuel Barber, to the
unabashed Romanticism of Howard Hanson (with a brief stop at Aaron Copland along the way) this is music that will touch your heart and rouse your spirit.”
This is the first time guest artist David Coucheron will play with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Coucheron is looking forward to sharing Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto with the Columbus community. “I was introduced to the Barber concerto rather recently,” said Coucheron. “It has become one of my favorite concertos. It is also perhaps, in my opinion, the greatest violin concerto written by an American composer. I am very excited to perform this in Columbus!”
Music in America is presented by W.C. Bradley Company, Aflac, Sunny 100, and the Marriott Columbus.
Tickets are $5 to $36 and may be purchased at the RiverCenter Box Office, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or one hour prior to the performance (enter doors located on Broadway side under covered drive to visit the box office).
