UGA Economic Outlook Series Gives Positive Columbus Outlook

The Columbus metro area should add about 1,500 jobs by the end of this year, although the specter of budget cuts — and the possibility of losing thousands of existing jobs — at Fort Benning remain a major, critical wild card.

That was the local economic forecast in a nutshell, the prognostication presented on Friday the 13th by the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business and its Selig Center for Economic Growth.

“The biggest downside risk to the forecast is that cuts in federal government spending are still needed and there’s no escaping the fact that Columbus is very dependent on (Department of Defense) spending,” said Selig Center research analyst Beata Kochut.
