The Russian National Ballet's Timeless and Iconic Swan Lake Comes to RiverCenter
Press release from the issuing company
Monday, February 16th, 2015
Swan Lake comes to RiverCenter with a tour de force performance by the Russian National Ballet on Friday, February 20 at 7:30pm.
The popularity of Swan Lake has only grown since it was first performed, and it has inspired generations of painters, poets, and even an Academy Award-nominated film, Black Swan.
Swan Lake is the story of Odette, a beautiful princess who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. She will remain trapped in the body of a white swan until true love sets her free.
What makes a work of art as timeless as “Swan Lake”?
The tragically evocative love story of mistaken identity and retribution;
the Russian National Ballet’s commitment to exceptional choreography;
and Tchaikovsky’s achingly beautiful score.
“Swan Lake is the most difficult thing to portray for a female ballet dancer; it really requires such specific qualities of articulation, agility, strength, and the arm work is something that takes a lot of training. — Black Swan Choreographer Benjamin Millepied
Sumptuous scenic, costume, and lighting design set the stage for a performance dance aficionados will not want to miss.
Founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, the company incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm.
Today, the company is lead by artistic director and the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko. Masters of artistry and athleticism, and many of whom have been with the company since its inception, these performers share a singular instruction and vast experience that uphold the grand national tradition of Russian ballet.
