Middle School Math Competition at Columbus Tech Adds Up to a Great Experience

Columbus Technical College will take time out this Saturday March 7th to play host to talented eighth graders in a spirited math competition called MATHCOUNTS. This marks the 10th year the event will be held in Carl Patrick Hall at Columbus Technical College. 

MATHCOUNTS showcases the talents of dozens of the best 8th grade mathematicians from six schools in our area. Arnold Magnet Academy, Blackmon Road Middle School, Brookstone School, East Columbus Magnet, St. Luke School, and Veterans Memorial Middle will all be represented. 

The opening ceremony will be held around 9:00 a.m. in McCaulley Auditorium (room P-100), with a lunch break at approximately 11:30 a.m.  The best media opportunity will be the “Lightning Round” portion of the program. It will kick off around 1:00 p.m. Awards will be presented at 1:30 or so. The top 4-person team and two individuals will compete at the state level on March 23 in Atlanta at Georgia Tech. From there, the top four (4) Mathletes and top coach earn the right to represent their state or territory at the national level. 

The program at Columbus Technical College has been organized by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. The Columbus, Georgia chapter of Mensa also provides volunteers for the event.
