Georgia Military College Columbus recently announced the winners for their Winter 2015 Ethics Essay Contest. Winners are awarded cash prizes for writing persuasive, passionate essays about the ethics theme of their choice. The competition is held every term and is open to all students attending classes at GMC Columbus campus.
Around 40 students submitted two-page, 500 word essays on a GMC “Word of the Week” ethics theme this term. The “Word of the Week” corresponds to a monthly character theme and is sent out to all students for a closer look at the definition of the word and how to apply this word in the real world.
Michelle Harris of Columbus, GA, won first place with her essay on “resilience.” She shares that this essay was an opportunity to acknowledge her role models, adding that, “maybe their story would encourage” other people. Michelle suggests that other GMC students should enter, “Because it helps keep you grounded in your own morals and values as you write about the different topics.”
This contest asks students to define the trait, provide a thorough definition of ethics, and describe a time they have personally seen this trait in action. Finally, they discuss why the trait is fundamental to ethics. Essays were judged based on how well they completed each criterion, and also on ease and enjoyment of reading.
Georgia Military College is an ethics-based institution, so this contest is one that is highly regarded within the college. Michelle agrees and adds, “Integrity is something shown here at GMC all the time. I think they are all proud to be a part of this company and they truly like helping the students and each other succeed.”
Michelle Harris of Columbus, GA, was the first place winner. Anabelle Pillar of Columbus, GA, won second place. Third place went to Matrice Palmer of Cataula, GA.
