In a drive that lasted about a month, Georgia Military College Columbus’ Phi Theta Kappa chapter collected about 20 items for the Ronald McDonald House. These were necessary items such as toilet paper, light bulbs, and other goods that help the House to care for families traveling with their children. The drive was announced in February 2015 and a bin was placed in the Student Center of the college for anonymous donations. In March 2015, PTK donated all of the items that had been collected.
The Ronald McDonald House was established to give families who travel for medical attention for their children a low-cost or free place to stay. Matthew Gray, of Atlanta, GA, former Vice-President of the GMC chapter of PTK, commented, “As we all know, even with health coverage, the bills can add up and that’s where the Ronald McDonald House comes in by providing shelter and warm beds at night.” The House posted a list of necessities that could be donated, and PTK stepped up to help out.
Caleb Freeman, of Phenix City, AL, current PTK chapter President, expressed how important volunteering is with, “As members of a community, we have a duty to give back,” and reminded us that, “Just in the Columbus area, we have a ton of great charities and organizations that benefit the public.”
