On Monday, May 18, 2015, Georgia Military College recognized Armando Fernandez for outstanding servant leadership. Armando was awarded not only the institution’s Distinguished Order of the Servant Leader award, but also the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. The minimum requirement for both of these awards is 100 hours dedicated to volunteer service, but Armando surpassed this minimum eight times over. With 817 hours served at Boy Scouts of America, Armando received the gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award, a certificate, and a letter from the president congratulating him for his efforts. Institutionally, Armando received the 7 oak cluster Distinguished Order of the Servant Leader award, and eight certificates for each 100 hours completed.

Armando embodies the Georgia Military College motto “Opera Cum Fidelitate,” to serve with fidelity. He dedicated his time outside of school to this organization and enriched the lives of the scouts he volunteered with. During his time volunteering, Armando often spent entire weekends with the scouts, teaching them wilderness survival skills, and sometimes a week at a time for camp. This is in perfect alignment with his hobbies, some of which include hiking, canoeing, and camping. For Armando, volunteering is meaningful because, in his words, “I like the opportunity to help young men to grow up to be productive members of our society.” He also says that volunteering is “aside from being a husband and father, the most satisfying thing.”
