TSYS Releases Research on U.K. Consumer Payments

Press release from the issuing company

Thursday, June 4th, 2015

TSYS has today published its inaugural U.K. Consumer Payments research report. This report includes information on key consumer payment preferences and new insights on a range of popular industry topics.

TSYS conducted quantitative research via a survey of more than 500 U.K. consumers, covering diverse demographics, including gender, age and income. The respondents were older than 17, had at least one debit card and one credit card, and owned a mobile phone.

"TSYS is committed to providing its clients and the wider industry with greater insights into current and evolving payment trends in the U.K. and Europe at large," said John Goodale, group executive, product and market development, TSYS International. “Our goal is to help card issuers deliver highly relevant payment strategies and initiatives, and we believe this serves as a useful tool for the industry in forming views on future trends.”

Key findings from the research include the following:

  • What distinguishes segments in a meaningful way is two-pronged: consumer comfort and increased use of digital tools, and a willingness to share data in return for value.
  • Consumers are more comfortable and competent in the use of apps and settings to manage their digital lives, and the preference for self-serve tools is extending to banking relationships.
  • E-commerce has reached mass adoption, with 56 percent of respondents indicating they keep a credit card on file with a retailer to make online purchases.
