Tuesday, July 28th, 2015
17 Georgia Military College Columbus Students traveled to Milledgeville, GA to attend a leadership training retreat at GMC’s main campus on July 16th and returned July 17th.
Leadership skills, teamwork, and trust were developed as the students worked to overcome mental and physical challenges, including a Leader Reaction Obstacle Course.
Students were selected to attend based on their involvement in student organizations and activities, desire to learn more about leadership, and demonstrated goals for the school. Members from the Student Honor Council, Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society, and Student Ambassador Program were in attendance. At the end of the retreat, the groups met to establish some goals for the upcoming term. The goals included a desire to get more involved with community service and have more involvement at the school, as well as a desire to recruit more members.
According to surveys taken by the students, the participants felt strongly that this retreat allowed them an opportunity to bond with other students, strengthening the leadership of student activities members. The obstacle course was challenging, but fun, even in sweltering summer heat. Already, students are excited for next year’s retreat.
SGA President Jeremiah Henderson of Columbus, GA says that the most useful lesson he learned was, “Communication is key,” something learned in the classroom and reinforced through the obstacle course.
