Thursday, August 6th, 2015
Students at Georgia Cyber Academy, an accredited, full-time, online public charter school, will begin their 2015-2016 school year on August 10thas the program marks its 9th year of operation in the state.
The first virtual charter school in Georgia history and currently the largest public school in Georgia, GCA is open to all students who reside in Georgia and serves students from all 159 counties across the state. By combining individualized online instruction, hands-on curriculum and the support of highly qualified and state-certified Georgia teachers, GCA helps students discover their individual learning style. GCA gives advanced learners the ability to progress faster in subjects at which they excel, including opportunities for advancement in STEM education and through dual enrollment.
"Online learning is one of the fastest growing areas in education, and we offer students expanded course options, increased education opportunities and customized learning programs," said Matt Arkin, the Head of School at Georgia Cyber Academy, "Our graduates are highly competitive in the college application process and workforce. Last year's GCA graduating class received over $1.2 million in college scholarships and earned over 1,300 college credits through dual enrollment."
Students who enroll at GCA follow an academic program that includes engaging web-based lessons along with age-appropriate instructional materials – books, videos, CDs and other hands-on tools and resources – which are shipped directly to each student's home. GCA teachers provide instruction, guidance and support, and regularly interact with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone and face-to-face meetings. Teachers also organize numerous field trips and school activities where students have the opportunity to participate in events that blend academics and socialization.
GCA has also been credited with improving academic outcomes for its students while reducing the achievement gap among economically disadvantaged students.
The rigorous and engaging curriculum includes courses in language arts/English, math, science, history, world languages, art and music, as well as elective and Advanced Placement® courses for high school students. College or career minded students can choose from a broad range of profession-focused courses in order to gain a competitive edge for the future, or take college courses for both high school and college credit at one of the more than 30 Georgia colleges and Universities that participate in GCA's Dual Enrollment program. Students can also choose to participate in dozens of extracurricular activities that cover a wide variety of interests, including the school's National Honor Society, Beta Club, Lego Club, Photography, flamenco dance and more.
GCA is still accepting enrollments for this fall. To learn more about enrollment requirements visit http://gca.k12.com/.
