New Columbus Alzheimer's Community Outreach Center Opening

Staff Report From Columbus CEO

Wednesday, February 17th, 2016

The Columbus Alzheimers Association will be opening its new Community Outreach Center in March of 2016.  "This is a dream realized from understanding the need to reach more families affected by Alzheimer's disease," states Christina Vogler, Statewide Senior Director of Relationship Events.

Currently, there are over 20,000 people suffering from Alzheimer's in our local area.  Georgia is one of nineteen states that will see a 40% increase of people diagnosed within the next ten years.  "Our Community Outreach Center is two fold," said Jeannie Pierson, Director of Community Outreach.  "It will serve as a place where families can come for consultation, information and learn to  live with the disease instead of just dying from it. People want to be able to make decisions about their future and they want a plan.  We want the center to be about the caregivers and the families, a comfortable place to talk without the feel of a sterile office environment. The other side of this is training the public about Alzheimer's disease.  We will have the capacity to teach large groups of people - from corporations to civic, church and social."  "With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 each day, and early onset Alzheimer's on the rise, we are facing an epidemic.  We need to get the message out to as many people as possible."

The Alzheimer's Association's new address is 5156 River Road, Suite M. For more information, call 706-324-2128 or email Jeannie Pierson at [email protected].
