Columbus Technical College is honored once again to play host to dozens of talented young people this Saturday February 20th for a spirited math competition called MATHCOUNTS. This marks the 11th year the event will be held in Carl Patrick Hall at Columbus Technical College.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in McCaulley Auditorium (room P-100), with a lunch break at approximately 11:30 a.m.  The best media opportunity will be the “Lightning Round” portion of the program. It will kick off in the auditorium around 12:00 p.m. The closing ceremony and awards presentation will be at 1:00 or so.

Teachers and students have been preparing for this completion since the fall. Students will compete both individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include: algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. The top four-person team and eight individuals will compete at the state level on March 21 at Georgia Tech. From there, the top four Mathletes and top coach earn the right to represent their state or territory at the national level.

This year, MATHCOUNTS will showcase the talents of 84 of the best 6th-8th grade mathematicians from ten schools in our area. They are: Aaron Cohn Middle School, Arnold Magnet Academy, Blackmon Road Middle School, Brookstone School, Don C. Faith Middle, East Columbus Magnet, Richards Middle School, Rothschild Leadership Academy, St. Luke School, and Veterans Memorial Middle School.

The program at Columbus Technical College has been organized by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. The Columbus, Georgia chapter of Mensa also provides volunteers for the event.
