On Wednesday March 23, 2016 from 2-4 p.m., United Way's Youth Camp and Youth Council along with several adult volunteers joined together to provide a beach-themed mini-carnival for kids at the Open Door Community House after-school program.
Alternative Spring Break got the name because it was viewed as the opposite of the more traditional Spring Break opportunity. Today, United Way’s Youth program students sign-up for a variety of reasons including a desire to take action on social issues, gain an exciting new experience, build new skills for their future, and to network with other young leaders.
Throughout its history, Open Door has expanded to meet the increasing needs of the community, which has responded by opening its heart to those in need. They work with children, women and families. The Alternative Spring Break Festival at Open Door is an exciting opportunity for kids to participate in a positive adventure during spring break. United Way encouraged this beach day for kids to have fun and be active.
Children enjoyed playing beach volleyball, water balloon toss, catch the bubbles, ring toss, go fish, face painting, limbo and hula hoop contest. Kids left with big smiles on their faces as they received door prizes popcorn and snow-cones.
United Way is honored to help kids experience meaningful and exciting activities. They will develop a stronger sense of place, empowerment, and positive hope for the future.
