The final concert of the CSU Philharmonic’s season features the Georgia premiere of Unsuk Chin’s wildly daring Clarinet Concerto with soloist Dr. Lisa Oberlander. This work has taken the world of music by storm since its premiere in 2014 with the Berlin Philharmonic. The orchestra finishes the concert and season with Tchaikovsky’s intensely dramatic Sixth Syphony Pathétique. All works are led by Paul Hostetter, The Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair in Orchestral Activities.

Schwartz-Kobrin Duo

Faculty artist Sergiu Schwartz, The William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Chair in Violin, hailed by Fanfare Magazine as “a younger violinist commanding such assured rhetoric and expressive resources as Heifetz, Milstein, Oistrakh, Isaac Stern, Francescatti” and faculty artist Alexander Kobrin, The L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano, called by the BBC the “Van Cliburn of today” perform works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Prokofiev.

CSU Wind Orchestra & Wind Ensemble

The final concert of the year for both wind ensembles, entitled Portraits, paints a picture of a various lives through musical means. Music of Barber evokes the spirit of an American soldier while Lo Presti’s composition reflects on President Kennedy. Closing the first half is Maslanka’s Traveler, tracing the journey of a life well lived. The second half features the acclaimed CSU Wind Ensemble with Earl Coleman, The William and Isabelle Curry Eminent Scholar Chair in Voice, narrating Copland’s famous depiction of another president in his “Lincoln Portrait.” Closing the season is a bold new transcription of Ravel’s adaption of Mussorgsky’s epic work, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Schwob Jazz Ensemble

The Schwob Jazz Ensemble is the flagship large ensemble of the CSU Jazz Studies Program. Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Whalen, this 18-piece large jazz ensemble focuses on presenting the best in contemporary and classic big band music. For this concert, the band performs in an intimate supper club environment at The Loft (1032 Broadway) in Uptown Columbus. Featured in performance with the band are CSU Jazz Faculty members Paul Vaillancourt, Ben Weatherford, Jacqueline Pickett, and Kevin Whalen.
