State Farm: Georgia Had 7th Highest Hail Claims in Nation
Friday, April 29th, 2016
State Farm, Georgia’s largest insurer, announced that in 2015 it paid out over $2 billion nationwide due to losses from hail damage.
Closer to home:
-Georgia had the 7th highest number of homeowners hail claims with over 5,000.
-The average homeowners claim nationally as a result of hail damage was $11,250 (based on State Farm claims).
-Georgia had an additional ~1,300 auto claims from hail.
-The average auto claim nationally as a result of hail damage was $3,500 (based on State Farm claims).
“Tornadoes and hurricanes are often thought of as the expensive weather events, but hail is right up there and often more expensive due to the sheer volume and cost of the claims” said State Farm Spokesman Justin Tomczak.
Preparing Your Home, Family – Wind and Hail
Hail storms often occur with thunderstorms, tornadoes, and other wind events and can cause millions of dollars in property damage to cars and homes.
If weather conditions are likely to produce hail you can take steps around the home like moving cars, boats, RVs, lawn and patio furniture into a covered area.
Personal safety is a number one priority and if you are indoors when a hailstorm hits, stay there. Hail can shatter windows so close drapes, blinds or window shades in an attempt to reduce the amount of broken glass that might blow inside.
Stay away from skylights and doors.
Good tree pruning can prevent many problems associated with a hail storm. Prompt removal of diseased, damaged, or dead plant parts helps reduce the possibility of future storm damage.
When building or remodeling, consider impact resistant roofing to reduce hail damage to your home. State Farm currently offers insurance premium discounts to homeowners in many states with qualifying impact-resistant roofing products.
After the Storm
After a hail storm, visually inspect your home for structural damage, take pictures and if possible, move your personal belongings to prevent further damage.
State Farm policyholders are encouraged to make temporary repairs to prevent further damage. For example, board up holes with plywood and cover leaks with plastic sheeting.
Policyholders should save receipts related to home repairs, vehicle towing, temporary housing, meals, and other living expenses. Expenses may be eligible for reimbursement after any required deductibles are met.
