CSO Presents the 2016-2017 Season
Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Wednesday, August 24th, 2016
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present our 2016-2017 concert season “Capture the Stars” filled with captivating performances of some the greatest composers of all time: Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, and Brahms. We will have an evening of “American Icons” featuring music of America (jazz, bluegrass, country, and more) and spoken word from some of our nation’s heroes. Come dressed to impress at our red carpet event – “CSO At The Oscars”, sure to be a night of glamour featuring the music of Aaron Copland, John Williams, and other famous film composers.
We will be kicking off the season with one of classical music’s best-known works, “Beethoven’s Fifth” on Saturday, September 17, 2016. Arguably one of the most recognizable opening themes of all time, we’ve heard this deaf composer’s work quoted in movies and television. Now is your opportunity to hear it come to life from start to finish. And that is not all! This concert features several timeless works by the great master. Attend “Know the Score” at 6:30 PM in the Studio Theatre, a casual pre-concert conversation with Music Director and Conductor George Del Gobbo sure to provide more insight into the repertoire on the evening’s concert.
Del Gobbo commented, “The CSO begins its 2016-17 season with a concert dedicated to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, perhaps the greatest composer ever. The program features a late overture (The Consecration of the House); an early work for Beethoven's favorite instrument, the piano (Concerto No. 3); and perhaps the most famous symphony ever written (Symphony No. 5), an expression of humanity's constant struggle against fate, this time ending in triumph. It's a thrilling opening to a most promising season----a concert not to be missed.” For Beethoven fans, it doesn’t get any better!
The 7:30 PM concert will feature Swiss-born American pianist Gilles Vonsattel, a second-time performer with the CSO. You may have heard him perform Brahm’s “Piano Concerto No. 1” at his appearance in our 2004-2005 Season. We are delighted to have him making his return!
“Beethoven’s Fifth” is presented by Aflac, 103.7 Litefm, Boomer 102.5, and Columbus Marriott.
Tickets are $5 to $38 and may be purchased at the RiverCenter Box Office, Monday through Friday, 10 PM to 5:30 PM or one hour prior to the performance (enter doors located on Broadway). Student tickets are available for $10. Tickets for children under 12 years of age are $5. For more information call the Rivercenter Box Office at 706.323.5059 or visit us online at www.csoga.org.
S’MORES – (Final Dress Rehearsal) for this concert is on Saturday September 17th, from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM We encourage attendance from all members of the community including those who are unable to attend the evening concert or looking for a “behind-the-scenes” look into the ensemble. It is also a great way to introduce your children to a live musical experience. Continuing the tradition, this informal and all-inclusive atmosphere is breaking the financial barrier by encouraging attendees to “pay what you want.” Audience members set their own prices to eliminate hesitation and allow new viewers to partake in the music being created by the CSO.
