CSO's American Icons: Symbols of Our Nation December 2nd
Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Wednesday, November 30th, 2016
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to present “American Icons: Symbols of Our Nation” on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 7:30 PM in Bill Heard Theatre at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. This concert is a celebration of all things American! Included will be the music of John Williams, Aaron Copland, Ferde Grofe, and many more.
Maestro George Del Gobbo states, “In the non-tech world, an icon is a person or thing that is representative of something. This concert will present music that is iconic in the sense that it celebrates or represents well-known people, places, and things that we consider uniquely and especially American. Included will be people like Abraham Lincoln, John Wayne, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Elvis; places like the Grand Canyon, and other American phenomena like baseball, jazz, and bluegrass music. The program will feature three narrators and will be a fun and entertaining musical experience for the whole family! Don’t sit at home recovering from Black Friday and worrying about the holidays. Join us for this special celebration of American Icons. (Then, after the concert, you can go back to worrying about what color socks to buy for Uncle Bob).”
Our featured narrators will be: Dr. Jimmy Elder, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in downtown Columbus – reading famous words of Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Philip Schley, well-known, retired Columbus Urologist and Chairman of the Muscogee County School Board – narrating “Casey at the Bat”, one of the best-known poems in American literature, and Isiah Harper, Theatre Instructor at Northside High School – speaking the famous words of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
“American Icons: Symbols of Our Nation” is presented by Pezold Management Associates, 103.7 LiteFM, Boomer 102.5, Valley Parent Magazine, and WTVM.
