Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley Launches New Literacy Initiative
Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Monday, January 23rd, 2017
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley’s Youth Literacy Initiative, “Read with Me—Learn to Read, Love to Read” was recently established by the organization to aid youth literacy in the community. We invite you to join us for the official launch of this new program and hear from the benefactors, volunteers, and children benefitting from the newest program of the BGCCV on Tuesday, January 24th, 2017. The goal of the initiative is to increase Club members’ proficiency at all grade levels in the areas of reading and language arts and to ensure members are performing at or above grade level.
An educational model created by BGCCV, which expanded academic programs and services within the organization, inspired the initiative. The model allowed BGCCV’s Youth Literacy Initiative to be housed in one of the cornerstones of the organization, Academic Success. Programming is measurable, comprehensive, and consistent for each local club. The target audience is the youth in grades K through 5th and selection is based on club members that are reading below grade level. “Read with me” will take place in 2 local clubs, 4 days per week with ‘read along’ sessions, as well as ‘read aloud’ to help our youth.
With 65% of youth of Georgia’s third graders lacking necessary vocabulary and reading comprehensions skills, students are more likely to struggle with school and not graduate from high school. The “Read with Me” initiative will focus on combating the alarming rates by creating engaging and educational programming.
BGCCV recognizes the importance of providing resources to at-risk youth in the Chattahoochee Valley. Through comprehensive programs, Club members’ skills are cultivated by supporting the mission: “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens”.
