The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) announced today that Metro Columbus’ unemployment rate in January was 7 percent, up seven-tenths of a percentage point from 6.3 percent in December. In January 2016, the rate was 6.8 percent.

The rate rose as the number of jobs and people in the labor force declined, while the number of new layoffs increased. These are normal seasonal fluctuations for January.

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance, a measure of new layoffs, rose by 733, or 65.9 percent, to 1,845. Most of the increase came in accommodations and food services. Over the year, claims were up by 312, or 20.4 percent, from 1,533 in January 2016.

The labor force, which consists of employed residents and those who are unemployed, but actively looking for jobs, declined by 107 to 124,662. The number of unemployed residents rose by 914 to 8,724, while the number of employed residents decreased by 1,021 to 115,938.
