Georgia Municipal Association Taps Jan Moore to Chair Tax Assessment Task Force

Friday, August 4th, 2017

Statesboro Mayor Jan Moore has been appointed chair of a Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) task force that will be examining the tax assessment process and fees charged to cities for tax collection.

The task force will look at the assessment process and determine if GMA should take a legislative position on the issue. In addition, they will examine compensation models used by tax commissioners in regard to collecting city taxes. GMA currently has no legislative position regarding the how cities compensate tax commissioners for collecting city taxes.

“GMA’s legislative policy process is very much member-driven,” said GMA Executive Director Lamar Norton. “Our membership has asked that we look at these issues and that is what we’re going to do. Mayor Moore is an excellent choice as chair of this committee, and I am confident she and the members of the committee will take into consideration all sides of the issue.”

The first meeting is scheduled for Aug. 7 and the committee has invited Dwight Robinson of the Fulton County Tax Assessors Office and Dr. Peter Bluestone of Georgia State University to share their knowledge on the subject.

Based in Atlanta, GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and technical assistance services to its 520 member cities.
