“We can build a better Harris County one penny at a time.” That’s the message from the Harris County Chamber of Commerce, whose Board of Directors unanimously endorsed a “yes” vote on Special Purpose Local Option Sales (SPLOST) 2019, which will appear on the May 22 ballot.
“When you visit the beautiful new library, see one of the new fire trucks at the volunteer fire departments, or ride on many of our repaved roads around the county, you know first-hand what the last SPLOST accomplished,” said Colin Martin, President & CEO of the Chamber. “We want to keep driving that momentum, with help from the visitors who spend money in Harris County.”
Funds raised by SPLOST 2019 will be used for projects in public safety, economic development, broadband, roads and bridges, and other infrastructure. In addition, SPLOST dollars will also pay off the indebtedness on the Harris County Community Center in Hamilton, which takes pressure off property tax revenues.
“We’re immediately beginning a campaign to promote SPLOST 2019 to civic and community groups around Harris County,” said Martin. “We want to spread the message to every corner that this is a good thing for Harris County and worthy of voters’ support.”
The election will be held on May 22, 2018. Early voting starts April 30, 2018. The voter registration deadline is April 24, 2018.
Governed by a board of community and business leaders, the Harris County Chamber of Commerce serves over 300 members, with a special focus on economic and community development. The Chamber supports the largest industry in Harris County, travel and tourism, as the destination marketing organization for areas outside of the city of Pine Mountain. The Chamber offices are located in the county seat of Hamilton.
