Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Class Begins August 20th
Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Friday, August 17th, 2018
A new trauma-sensitive yoga class begins on Monday, August 20, from 3:30-4:30 at Yoga Inspired, 1365 Warren Williams Road, Columbus, GA. This weekly class taught by Meredith Phipps, a trauma-sensitive certified yoga instructor, supports anyone dealing with trauma, as well as health professionals who work with trauma survivors.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga is an effective approach to dealing with traumatic experiences that may leave individuals feeling disconnected from their body and emotions. This disassociation can make talk therapies less effective until the individual feels safe within themselves.
The goal of this class is not to dredge up old memories or intentionally trigger emotions, but to reconnect the student to their body in a safe, non-judgmental environment where they can explore movement, breath work, and mindful meditation at their own pace.
Studies show that “The growing body of literature supporting the use of yoga as an adjunctive treatment for a number of mental health conditions suggests that it is a promising tool for partner violence survivors seeking group therapy.” Other studies on PTSD reflect participants’ feelings of “gratitude and compassion, relatedness, acceptance, centeredness, and empowerment.”
Yoga Inspired is a local yoga studio committed to bringing wellness and mobility to clients at every age.
