Fort Benning Officials Announce Unusual Visitor
Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Thursday, November 29th, 2018
An official announced Wednesday that Fort Benning recently received an application for a Visitor’s Pass from one “Mr. S. Claus,” who listed his residential address as the North Pole. The application is unusual in that it is the first of its kind in the 100 year history of Fort Benning. The official confirmed that the application was granted, and the applicant was issued a Trusted Traveler’s visitor pass.
The spokesman for the post did not wish to speculate as to the nature of the visit, nor did he confirm that the applicant is the same “Claus” known as Santa who has been delivering toys to Fort Benning boys and girls every year on 25 December since 1918.
He did confirm that the Claus application requests access for December 6, which is the date of the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the lawn of Riverside, the home of Maj. Gen. Gary Brito and his wife Michelle. That event, scheduled for 5:30-8:30pm, includes a performance by the MCoE Band, games and prizes, refreshments, general merriment and a “special surprise visitor.” Guests should dress warmly and bring a camera in case they wish to have their children photographed with the “special surprise visitor."
This is a free event for Fort Benning families, including those who live off post, the families of retired Soldiers, and the families of DoD civilian employees. Riverside is located at the intersection of Vibbert and Lumpkin streets on Main Post.
