On Wednesday, December 12 at 10:00 a.m., officials from Columbus Technical College and the Muscogee/Columbus Literacy Alliance will cut the ribbon on a new and vastly-improved adult literacy classroom located at 2701 11th Ave in the Early College Academy. The ribbon-cutting itself will occur in the courtyard of the Academy. Columbus City Councilor Jerry “Pops” Barnes is among the V.I.P.’s expected to attend.
The College’s Adult Education Department donated time and provided significant upgrades to the Literacy Alliance classroom in an effort to streamline the relationship between the two organizations. The Adult Education department works with Literacy Alliance to refer students who prefer a smaller learning environment to work on reading and math to build confidence as they progress toward earning their GED.
The Columbus Technical College Adult Education Department donated a testing machine, testing materials, updated books and a classroom upgrade to include paint, white board and furniture.
April Hopson, Director of Adult Education of Columbus Technical College calls the refurbished classroom a labor of love saying, “The relationship with Literacy Alliance is very important. Education begins within the community at any level at any location. The most important thing we can do is listen to the needs of our students and make sure we provide what we can to the best of our ability. The students’ success is the goal and we are here for whatever needs they may have.”
Columbus Technical College provides education services to residents in six counties: Chattahoochee, Harris, Muscogee, Quitman, Stewart, and Talbot.
