Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley’s  (BGCCV) Club members will compete in the Boy Scout Pinewood Derby Race. The first Pinewood Derby race was organized by Cubmaster Don Murphy on May 15, 1953, at Pack 280C’s Scout House in Manhattan Beach, California. Soon the race spread across the country to make is mark annually on the calendars of Boy Scout packs. Kiwanis Club of Columbus partnered with the North Columbus Boys & Girls Club; to help fourteen excited (k-5th grade) boys and girls build their cars over a three week time period. Work sessions included three different days at one and a half hours each.

For the race, Cub Scouts build small, driverless cars, and then race them against other Cub Scouts in their pack. Assisted by adults, Cub Scouts craft the cars from kits of pinewood blocks, plastic wheels, and metal axels. Packs create their own rules for the race. One general rule is that cars must weigh 5 ounces or less. Some cars may compete for “best design” and the fastest car. Winning is a big deal to the kids, but so is having fun! The annual event is a memory for both adults and kids. On Wednesday, February 27, 2019 North Columbus Club members will put their carts to the test in the Pinewood Derby Race.

Through this competition our kids will grow their leadership skills and creative abilities. Club Scouts root on each other’s cars and support one another through winning and losing. Kids develop their creative abilities through the challenge of building and painting a fast and light-weight wood car.

BGCCV recognizes the importance of providing resources and activities to at-risk youth in the Chattahoochee Valley. Through activities like the Pinewood Derby Race, Club members’ leadership skills are cultivated by supporting the mission: “to enable all young people, especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens”.
