Columbus State University is celebrating our long time supporter, Representative Calvin Smyre on his recognition of the Aflac Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the second such award in the last month for Smyre. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Georgia Black Caucus in August.
Columbus’s State Representative Smyre, Dean of the Georgia House of Representatives, has joined a distinguished list of recipients to include U.S. Congressman Sanford Bishop and U.S. Congressman John Lewis. Smyre is currently the longest-serving Georgia state representative, and is being recognized by Aflac for his “distinguished legislative record, which includes authoring legislation that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a state holiday, co-sponsoring legislation that resulted in the removal of the Confederate battle emblem from Georgia’s state flag, and legislation authorizing the building of the Georgia Dome, former home of the Atlanta Falcons.”
