CSU Football Team Ranked First in the Country
Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Thursday, October 17th, 2019
Columbus State has a football team, and they are currently ranked #1 in America. Really! CSU’s club football team is 4-0 at mid-season and ranked first in the country for the first time ever. The team is an 11-member tackle football team, made up of 44 students and a 7-member coaching staff. CSU recruits students from as far away as New Orleans, but most are home grown players using their second chance to play in college.
“We have a football team, and we would love if everyone would come out and support us,” states Head Coach Michael Speight. “We are an NCFA (National Club Football Association) team, playing against Division I schools. We appreciate support from our local community and the CSU family so much.”
Students have a chance to see the team in the Homecoming Parade this Friday, before they head out to Gainesville for our next game against the University of Florida on Sunday. CSU will follow that game with one against Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina on October 26. The team will wrap the season with a pair of conference games against Middle Georgia State in Cochran and against Fort Lauderdale (Florida) University at home on November 9 at 7 p.m. at Kinnett Stadium. CSU is hoping for a sell out at their Senior Night there. If CSU continues their success, they’ll progress to the conference championships, up to the National Championship on December 7 in Virginia.
The Columbus State Club football team has been a member of the NCFA since 2009, celebrating their tenth year this year. The football teams at Kennesaw State and Georgia State both started in the same league prior to moving to NCAA competition in the last couple of years.
