The Harris County Board of Commissioners proudly announces the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Railroad Recreation Trail-Phase I to be held on Wednesday, November, 20, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of US 27 and Broad Street in Pine Mountain. The new 1.1mile paved recreation trail, beginning at the intersection of US 27/Chipley Street and ending at the intersection of US 27/SR 354, will be an attractive amenity to the Harris County community that will allow residents and visitors to enjoy non-motorized activities such as walking, jogging, running, and bicycling.
The new trail will have features including an informational trail head kiosk, park benches, trash cans, and a distance marker system. The new trail had a construction cost of $575,000 and was funded by a $512,473 federal Transportation Enhancement grant and county SPLOST funds. Phases II and III, beginning at the intersection of US 27/SR 354 and ending behind the Mountain Creek Inn, will add an additional 1.66 miles to the trail and both phases are currently under construction. Phases II and III are scheduled to be completed by late March 2020 and are being funded by a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, a federal Recreational Trails Program grant, and county SPLOST funds.
