Staff Report From Columbus CEO
Monday, February 24th, 2020
Columbus State University’s Counseling Center is hosting the second annual Southern Smash event today to raise awareness about eating disorders and promote body positivity.
The cathartic “scale smash” will take place at the CSU Clock Tower from 12 to 2 p.m. Attendees will be able to decorate plastic scales and smash them with various tools to symbolize that self-worth isn’t measured by weight. A tent will be set up with music, food, information, and resources. This event is free and open to the public.
Southern Smash is a 501(c)3 non-profit that aims to educate the public about the dangers of eating disorders, while empowering women and men to celebrate and embrace self-love by physically smashing scales. Its founder and Chief Smasher, McCall Dempsey, started Southern Smash in November 2012, after battling an eating disorder for 15 years, to challenge men and women to redefine their worth and beauty by letting go of the perfect number.
