Piedmont Columbus Regional has renamed the Breast Care Center at the John B. Amos Cancer Center to the Elena Amos Breast Care Center in recognition and memory of Elena Amos’s longstanding commitment to breast cancer treatment in Columbus. Both she and her husband John, founder of Aflac, have left an incredible healthcare legacy in Columbus for generations to come.
Elena and John B. Amos had a very personal commitment to supporting outstanding cancer care in Columbus with the dream of providing world-class cancer care to every person regardless of their circumstance. Elena paved the way for world-class breast care in Columbus with her focus on women’s health.
“By dedicating the John B. Amos Cancer Center’s breast care facility to Mrs. Elena, our family hopes to unite Mr. John and Mrs. Elena’s legacies under one roof,” said Wanda Amos, daughter-in-law of the late John and Elena Amos.
John and Elena Amos’s vision was most recently honored as Wanda Amos and Dan Amos, Mr. Amos’s nephew, chaired the Capital Campaign for the John B. Amos Cancer Center and led the effort in raising $15.8 million in support for the renovation and expansion of the center in 2019. The John B. Amos Cancer Center doubled its capacity to meet the demand of rising incidences of cancer locally and nationally as well as the increased number of cancer survivors needing support services.
In August 2019, the Elena Amos Breast Care Center relocated from its previous location on Hamilton Road to the newly renovated space within the John B. Amos Cancer Center. Patients from around the community can now see their breast care physician alongside Columbus’s best oncologists in a comfortable setting. The Breast Care Center sees over 60 women each day resulting in over 15,000 patient visits a year.
